Native Iowans and backgrounds in Horticulture from Iowa State, we have come back to our roots in Northwest Iowa. Our passion for grape growing/viticulture, and winemaking/enology have grown from wine tasting in Santa Barbara, to volunteering at a boutique winery in California, and continuing education at Des Moines Area Community College with the goal of becoming certified in viticulture and enology while, of course, tasting as much wine as possible along the way.
Calico Skies Vineyard and Winery was established in April 2010. Our sprawling 5 acre vineyard was planted May 2010, with building construction beginning in June 2010, followed by our grand opening on May 21st, 2011. Silhouetting Northwest Iowa sunsets, our winery over-looks hills near the Big Sioux River. These breathtaking views and unending skies grant a perfect backdrop to celebrate life and the profound and simple moments that make it. Our goal is to provide a high quality and unique experience while highlighting our Iowa wines. We invite each guest to connect with our living adventure by following the grapes from vine to wine. Each cold-hardy grape variety is hand-crafted to feature the grape's natural fruit character, ranging from fresh fruity whites to dry oak aged reds. We are committed to showcasing a unique and beautiful place to hold events, and celebrations. Above all, we aim to serve our customers with care and the best product and experience available. |
At Calico Skies Vineyard and Winery we use cold hardy French-American hybrid grapes to hand-craft a diverse selection of dry to sweet wines. Each CS wine is produced and bottled on-site in our winery production room. With exception of our unique blends, our wine names derive from the grape varietal or fruit used. For example, the wine "La Crescent" uses only the La Crescent grape variety… We have an established 5 acre vineyard on property and also work with other local vineyards to produce the best quality grapes.
